Forthcoming Shows and Demonstrations

On our show stands we exhibit a full range of carvings, often including large garden sculptures, many of which are for sale,  and at the same time there are usually two woodcarvers demonstrating the craft using hand tools in the traditional way. We are always pleased to see old friends at the exhibitions and to catch up on your latest works, and prospective students will have a chance to meet and talk to Zoe, your tutor, and see her at work, carving.

Next Show: 2018

October 26/27  Woodworking Show, Westpoint, Exeter

How was it done?

These pictures show progress as Zoe worked on her 'Hairdresser' carving.  Wonder and watch as whilst working with hand tools only a log of wood gradually develops into a work of art ...

A log of Cherry about 17in diameter came from near Liskeard, Cornwall. Waste wood around the figures was removed with large deep gouges and a hand saw.

The gaps between the figures and between the arms were made using a brace and bit and gouges.

The shapes of the figures were refined ready for the detailed carving.

The edge of the skirt was cut and the feet and legs carved beneath. The figures of a hairdresser and  'our Gran'are emerging.

The back of the salon's chair was carved so that 'Gran' sits in it. The feet of the chair are relieved from the base.

The hairlines of each head were cut and jaw lines and necks carved within the necklines.

The hairdresser's face was carved before hands and arms.

Hair rollers were drawn over Gran's head and carved, followed by her face.
